Welcome to Grey Peel Texels
At Grey Peel we produce our Performance Recorded Texels just south of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders only a few miles from the English border.
The aim of the flock is to produce sheep that can perform well in a show ring but can also provide the necessary growth, muscle, longevity, servicing capability etc. that commercial breeders require. We do not forget that 98% of all tups are sold to commercial flocks to produce prime lambs.
This is why Grey Peel Texels is a firm believer in performance recording but the sheep must also be capable of performing well in the show ring.
During 2010 and 2011 these attributes are starting to show through. A significant Texel tup, Knock Papoose, was purchased by Grey Peel in 2009 as a lamb at the Scottish National sale and he then won the shearling class at RHAS 2010 and has gone on to produced many show winners. His impact on the Grey Peel flock has been tremendous.
Another significant animal has been the Cambwell ewe, LTC07536, who was purchased at the 2008 Select Seven sale. Her index improved year on year to reach a zenith of 392 and she produced a number of quality lambs especially Grey Peel Rambo HMF1000004, index 354, who won Kelso show 2011 after being strongly noticed at the Great Yorkshire Show. He then went on to win the Championship at Kelso Ram Sales achieving the highest price on the day and the highest ever Texel price of £15,000 at Kelso and the second highest UK Texel shearling price. His ET brother Grey Peel Rocket HMF1000009, index 381, was second at Kelso and fourth at the Great Yorkshire, with Glenside Ring a Ding third at Kelso, Rocket also sold for £3,000 at the Ram sales. Full ET sisters are retained in the flock. In line with Grey Peel Texels aims, all females have significant performance indices with many being in the top 5% of the breed and a number in the top 1%.
