Grey Peel Females

With my hip operation, combined with catching the MRSA bug, proving to be so problematical it was decided in the Autumn of 2010 to sell the adult female portion of the Grey Peel flock at H&H in Carlisle on 7th January 2011.  The sale attracted a full ring side and a top bid of 4,400gns for the Cambwell ewe LTC07536 and 1,800 gns for a Knock bred ewe sired by Glenside Loneranger (FPG05056), and out of a 12,000gns Anglezarke Krug (SSQ04424), bred mother and going back to Muiresk and Glenside breeding lines. The averages were – 42 ewes £451.00, 52 shearling gimmers £546.00, 94 head overall £503.55. Homebred gimmers and ewes sold to 1,500 gns,  1,400 gns, 1,100 gns, and 1,000 gns. 71 of the 94 were in the top 1%, 5% and 10% of an index for the Texel breed. Daughters of these females are the foundation of the present Grey Peel flock.

The basis of the flock is the 2010 born gimmers who have been sired by extremely notable tups especially Knock Papoose with the other tups being Cambwell Osprey, son of Cambwell Laird, Cowal Paco, son of Castleknowe Matchmaker and full ET brother to Cowal Powerhouse, and Drinkstone Oh So Smart. As can be seen quality pedigrees behind the gimmers. It is hoped that the resulting standard of this years gimmers gives an additional significant improvement for the flock and in the lambs produced this coming year.

In addition to what is felt to be a higher show ring capability and in line with Grey Peel Texel aims, all the females have significant performance indices with 33% of the females in the top 10% of the breed, 41% in the top 5% and 8% in the top 1%, which shows that over 80% of the females are in the top 10% of the breed. This combined with the show quality high performance tups used gives great anticipation for the forthcoming lambing season.
